Reef regeneration
Ends
As Manager of the dive shop on Hideaway I have managed to enroll the Univercity of Newcastle Australia to under take a marine survey and reef health check with the aim to regenerate the coral reef surrounding Hideaway we have forty Marine bio students and scientis coming to study map and monitor the reefs around us.
They will be coming to assist in the design and development of the sustainability of the reef system and construction of the new coral nurseries
They have signed up for two major visits each year and have a few minor visits to monitor and aid in the resoration of our reef system here
Already I have started building structures for the coral gardens and am in the process of building structures to help stop the errosion of the reef and surrounding enviroments
Together we also want to educate the local community about reef conservation and sustaniable fishing
Hideaway is a self run and declared marine sanctuary and attracts visitors from all round the globe for the snorkelling and diving.
Debrie clean ups and Crown of thorn culls have been an on going project with us here and we have managed to keep the COTs under control
We are aiming to introduce the Biorock system here and create new and healthy corals
I am currently investigating other methods of coral growths and hope that in the future we can restore the coral reefs here
Unfortunatly alot of the reef system is damaged through natural processes ie. cyclones and earthquakes
Pollution is also being targeted
If anyone is interested in coming along to see and aid in the studies please feel free to contact me via email Ian [email protected]
Updates and photos will be posted shortly
