Cuttlefish and Shark surveys At Tip Of Borneo Sabah
Ends
The broadclub cuttlefish gathers in large numbers to spawn close to the Tip of Borneo during Dec to March. TRACC is hosting a series of volunteer diving expeditions to a variety of different reefs around the Tip of Borneo to experience this unique event. Spawning aggregations of squid are common around the world but cuttlefish aggregations are only know from one location in South Australia. This is the first time that anyone has had the opportunity to see this unique event in tropical waters. A wide variety of sharks appear to feed on the cuttlefish and eggs and larger sharks (tigers & bull) have been caught feeding on the small sharks. A few weeks later as the cuttlefish eggs hatch, we have the chance to see whale sharks which feed on the plankton bloom caused by the upwelling water. Bring your camera there will be some great photo opportunities.
