Coralwatch

2014 introduces CoralWatch to Scubascene, CoralWatch integrates global monitoring of coral bleaching with education about coral reef conservation. CoralWatch is based at The University of Queensland, in Brisbane, Australia. In 2002, CoralWatch developed and validated the CoralWatch Chart. Monitoring coral bleaching using a colour reference card. The card standardises changes in coral colour, providing a simple way to quantify bleaching and monitor coral health. The Coral Health Chart is used by dive centres, scientists, school groups, and tourists. Anyone can contribute to the global datebase! You don't need extensive training.

On the 7th June Scubascene will be holding a Coral Conservation presentation at the dive center at 3pm. Most of you know Ari Taylor as one of our Divemaster's however you may not know that Ari is in her second year of Marine Vertebrate Zoology at Bangor University. Her speciality is Coral Conservation. So Ari will be here to talk about the importance of Coral Health and how to identify species in the local area. Ari will also introduce us to the techniques and equipment needed for the CoralWatch project and how to get involved.

If you have not meet Ari, here is your first informal introduction! Don't forget to sign up for our event.

Hi im Ari I am currently studying second year Marine vertebrate Zoology at Bangor University which I enjoy very much especially the practical side. This course usually entails practicals every other week example of practicals that I have done are rocky shore practicals, fish ageing, fish surveys and general research of species to collect data and process it. My favourite activity is off course scuba diving, which two summers ago I passed my divemaster with Scuba scene, I tend to dive a lot in the UK and in Malta which I go every summer. I am very interested in Marine species as you can tell by my course I am studying, I have a great passion In Orca research and coral reefs. The reason I have chosen to go down the Marine sector is that I am fascinated with the underwater ecosystem and how species can with stand such high extremities.
