Gili Air Harbour seems to be a collection point of debris from the mainland (Lombok).. When it rains on Lombok, the rubbish flows into the ocean and the currents bring it to the harbour. Other dive sites around the Gilis have some rubbish but nowhere near as bad as the harbour area.

Tourists and locals littering has added to it as well. Food wrappers and big rice bags (sometimes filled with cement) seem to be the most common rubbish.
