On the 23rd of May, divers, snorkelers and team members of Blue Ocean Dive Centers & Resorts, TGI Diving, Tulip Beach Resort and Gorgonia Beach Resort responded to the call for a beach cleanup and Dive Against Debris – a chance to give back to the Red Sea.
We are thrilled to report that over 35 participants gave up their valuable time to do their part in caring for our fragile marine environment. On a day with beautiful weather, everyone contributed to making the event more meaningful by collecting and recording important information on what is littering our natural bays.
The cleanup took place in Sharm Fojheiri, a natural bay located 40 km south of Marsa Alam City, N 24.754816° - E 35.065317°.
As with all other natural bays in the southern Red Sea, Sharm Fojheiri is an important feeding ground for dugongs and green sea turtles, and is also home for more than 15 hawksbill turtle individuals. In total, 4.6 tons of beach litter and 90 kg of debris were collected during the Dive Against Debris.
Unfortunately however there still remains a large amount of litter such as fishing lines on the reef, representing a real threat to its inhabitants. We will be calling out soon for another underwater cleanup! Bit-by-bit, we strive to restore the Red Sea's marine ecosystems to places free of human pollution.
On behalf of the RED SEA PROJECT™️, we would like to extend our gratitude to all participants – thank you so much for joining us in the cleanup of Sharm Fojheiri. To the leadership and people of Marsa Alam Coast Guard Intelligence and Security office - thank you for your support!
Calm
