Comments | Discovering a dead Fiddler Ray, entangled in fishing line with a hook in its mouth was the motivating factor to do this impromptu clean up dive. The ray was just out from under the pier and it would appear it became entangled when eating the bait on the hook, but that when the fisherman tried to pull it in, the line snapped and became entangled on a star picket that marks a route to a small reef area. Other sea creatures had been feeding on the ray carcass. |
Additional Information
The entire point of this dive against debris for us was to collect discarded fishing line and lures. Following a sunny week, there had obviously been lots of fishermen on the pier, and with it having been quite windy, the swell would have been above average for the time of year. This often leads to an increase in broken fishing line, hence the need to clean up the pier.
