Monuriki Island is cleaned twice yearly by Dive Tropex Tokoriki and children from Yanuya Island. We first started cleaning this island 4 or 5 years ago, and we think recorded 40 bags of rubbish.
This clean up yielded only 4 bags of rubbish and a large piece of metal yacht hull! We put this massive reduction of rubbish on the island down to our policy of insisting that our guides take a rubbish bag every time they take Tokoriki guests to this island. This takes place at least twice weekly.
In recent years the island has become very popular with day trippers. On average around 100 visitors visit the island every day.
As far as we know, we are the only operator that picks up litter we see on every visit...it would be great if every operator did the same.
