Did you know that a staggering 250 million metric tons of plastic could make its way to the ocean in the next 10 years? One of the reasons Project AWARE is collecting marine debris data from divers is to help build a clear picture of the underwater trash that threatens ocean life. With this knowledge, we can make more effective decisions when it comes to waste management policies.

It’s the only pirate ship discovered in the Caribbean and it’s the site of Dive Against Debris this Saturday, September 17th. The Captain Kidd's 1699 Quedagh Merchant shipwreck located offshore Isla Catalina in the Dominican Republic continues to see its share of marine debris. The constant flow of our trash from the nearby river threatens this irreplaceable historical and biological treasure that rests among an endangered Elkhorn coral habitat.  

Protection for key nature sites in UK seas has come a step closer with the unveiling of proposals to create over 100 Marine Conservation Zones (MCZs).
The zones range from tiny stretches of coastline to large tracts of sea floor.
The proposals stem from the 2009 UK Marine Bill and cover seas abutting the English coast and waters around Wales more than 12 miles from the coast.

And thanks to their fantastic work and spirited Dive Against Debris competitions, we now have debris data recorded for three pairs of men’s underpants and a parachute.
Since Project AWARE’s June launch of the new Dive Against Debris program, developed just for divers, 13 Dreaming Dolphins has been logging their debris dives each month. And you just never know what you’re going to find.

ScienceDaily® (Aug. 30, 2011) - Preserving just 4 percent of the ocean could protect crucial habitat for the vast majority of marine mammal species, from sea otters to blue whales, according to researchers at Stanford University and the National Autonomous University of Mexico. Their findings were published in the Aug. 16 edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The Aussie Fundraising team, an initiative of Alan Nash and Tommy Soderstrom, owners of El Galleon Dive Resort and Asia Divers, Philippines, were just given a royal send-off on their fundraising journey around Australia. Divers from St. George Underwater Centre in south Sydney initiated their journey in the most fitting way they know how - by Diving Against Debris and hosting a BBQ.
