When the going gets tough….. the ocean crazy among us go Tough Mudder! We chat with Project AWARE’s very own fundraising team, Lauren Wiskerson and Orsi Fulop, who both endured one of the toughest events on the planet. And, all in the name of conservation.

"Just as we’d like to keep our homes clean, we feel the need to keep our ocean clean and unpolluted as well," says Rob Partridge, PADI Master Instructor at Temple Adventures in India. Rob shares how his team is tackling marine debris, trawling and ghost nets fins on and one dive at a time.

In September 2017, Hurricane Irma bore down on Florida and parts of the Caribbean, leaving behind disruption and devastation. Millions evacuated in advance of the storm. Key Largo resident Jack Fishman was one of those evacuees. Like many others, he used the forced time away to connect with friends and dive buddies about gathering needed supplies for those in need and to lay out plans for organizing ocean and land debris cleanups. This is the kind of work the dedicated team at Rainbow Reef Dive Center cares deeply about. 

Oil and water don't mix. Not unless you're a dive rig. Decommissioned and re-purposed as a scuba diving resort, Seaventures Dive Rig is a one of a kind location. We chat with PADI Instructor, Pete Hamerton on how the world's only dive rig has put environmental education at the heart of its local community.

30 old tires, unimaginable lengths of fishing line and even a porn DVD or two. These were just some of the finds when Suzy Pinnell and her partner Mark opened The Dive Bus in Curacao, 13 years ago. Now with the help of locals, divers and other operators, they're helping create an island community that is taking charge of their conservation problems.

"I feel accomplished when I see the spark ignite in my students’ eyes, and I know that from that minute forward they will spend the better part of their life working to honor their commitment to ocean conservation." We chat with Katerina Topouzoglou from Greece who has engaged over 3000 students, young and old, to be ambassadors for sharks.

Dive centers on the island of Curaçao in the south Carribean understand that conservation isn't done in isolation. That's why this August they have announced an exciting new partnership. Four dive centers have joined together as part of Project AWARE's Adopt a Dive Site with another eight coming on board soon. Together this island community is cleaning up, taking action and working together.
