While this year’s Shark Week, July 23-30, might still be a bad week to be a seal, it’s also a good week to be a real shark fan and help support shark conservation. The week-long series of programming dedicated to sharks will once again place the shark conversation at an all-time high around the world with its 29th season premiering for the first time in more than 220 countries and territories. The world prepares to celebrate World Environment Day and World Oceans Day. The United Nations is hosting a high-level Ocean Conference in New York, June 5-9 and calling on all actors for Voluntary Commitments to support the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goal “Life Below Water”. Together with our partners and the dive community, we support the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable #LifeBelowWater #SaveOurOcean.

Sharks and rays are facing increased risk of extinction. There is no magic “silver bullet” that will solve all the very serious threats of overfishing and habitat loss that sharks and rays face, but responsible tourism practices can certainly help.

When was the last time you did something for the first time? Something that made you excited to jump out of bed in the morning? For me, it was the goal I set to run a half marathon for the first time last year as a Finathon fundraiser...

Four shark and ray species, who deserve to be better loved, have been nominated in the Wildscreen’s Arkive #LoveSpecies campaign by conservation charities, including Project AWARE, to raise awareness of the plight of these under-appreciated and unloved sea creatures.

Project AWARE’s vision for 2017? A return to a clean, healthy and abundant ocean planet. No group has greater potential to influence positive change for our big, blue world than scuba divers do. Time and again, Project AWARE’s global network of dive volunteers has proven that when we work together, big change is possible. As we prepare to make a splash for ocean conservation in the upcoming year, we’d like to take a moment to reflect on all that Project AWARE divers accomplished in 2016.
