Our Reef Clean Up

Last Saturday (June 11th, 2022), my brand new Divemasters and I went on a dive against debris on one of our favorite part of the Akumal reef. Akumal is well famous for its many turtles and even though it already is a protected area, we feel a responsability to keep the reef clean from debris and trash and to raise awareness amongst other divers.

There was a mild current and we were doing a drift dive, so we formed a line above the reef and just let the current take us. We were all very focused on our mission but I really appreciated seeing that - even though they were really focused on looking for debris and trash - my divematsers never forgot to look around and be aware of their surroundings and their buddy's location as well as the second team's location. I am really glad I was able to teach them that level of awareness and it's rewarding to watch them grow into dive professionals. *proud mom face*  ;P

Our best reward was to not find any debris and have to testify that this part of the reef was as clean as can be.

We've really enjoyed this dive and even if we didn't collect any debris on this, it doesn't mean we shouldn't be monitoring and keeping an eye out. We love the idea of adopting the reef of Akumal and making it our responsability to monitor it for debris. Looks like we'll be doing another dive against debris soon, I hope more people join us next time so we can survey a larger section of the reef! :)
