Another Ghost Net Clean up on the MV Jasim, Abu Dhabi
Congratulations to these amazing divers from Al Mahara, Azraq and Dubai Volunteer Divers who came together this weekend on 2nd Oct and dived the MV Jasim, a coastal tanker that has been lying on the seabed since 1986. It is also a popular wreck dive for divers seeking for more adventures.
Over 80kg of ghost nets and discarded fishing gears were collected by these experienced divers since the wreck lies at 27meter deep waters. Divers equipped themselves with gloves, cutting tools, mesh bags, compass to carefully remove the ghost nets. These types of marine debris can be hazardous to marine life and divers as they can cause entanglement and continuously trap and kill fish, crustaceans, marine mammals like dugongs and dolphins, sea turtles, sharks and even seabirds. By clearing marine debris and ghost nets, we also remove these threats from the marine life. Divers throughout last year have already been cutting away at the ghost nets as it covered a third of the bow section of the wreck making it a hazard for both marine life and divers. Additionally some abandoned gargours were almost removed from previous dives. We hope to continue with our dedicated divers to remove more marine debris from the sea and wrecks. More and more divers are taking the lead and diving with a purpose whether to monitor the coral reefs or dive against debris.
