What happens when “World Oceans Day” happens right bang in the middle of your PADI Scuba Diving Instructor Development Course (IDC)?

Well, when you take the PADI IDC with Industry Leading Multiple Platinum PADI Course Director Holly Macleod, there is always the option to get involved in environmental activities, and being in the Gili Islands means there are loads of environmental projects to get involved with.

This year Gili Trawangan seemed to go “all out” on the variety of environmental awareness and accompanying activities spearheaded by Sian Williams of the Gili Eco Trust, supported by the Instructor team at Trawangan Dive. The great thing is that around the “World Oceans Day” period there were multiple choices of activities, courses and awareness presentations which were not just confined to one single day making it easy for professional Divemaster’s on the PADI IDC to easily get involved.

On the actual day there was a Project AWARE “Dive Against Debris” activity in the morning which everyone chose to get involved in, some even going a step further and taking the PADI “Dive Against Debris” Specialty Instructor Course. In the afternoon Sian William arranged an island wide beach clean-up, assigned clean up teams and designated specific area’s with a central meetup point to collect debris and start the process of separating and sorting for recycling. The most amazing thing about the day’s events is that in total a whopping 510Kg of trash was removed from the beaches and dive sites surrounding Gili Trawangan and was successfully allocated to the nearby recycling centre.

Other things going on within this period before and after “World Oceans Day” include the Coral Reef Restoration & Propagation Courses conducted by Sian as well as the regular scheduled beach & inland clean-up activities which are organized by the Gili Eco Trust (i.e. Sian). Another local project is a tree propagation initiative that has been taking place on the island of Gili Trawangan which involves the replanting of native tree’s to the area and to keep the island green and oxygenated.
