Project AWARE News

On 3rd March, people everywhere will celebrate World Wildlife Day, a day to celebrate and raise awareness of the world’s wild fauna and flora. For ocean adventurers like us, it’s an opportunity to recognize the value of marine life and remind ourselves of our responsibility to protect it.

Many marine species, from sea turtles to sharks and rays, have joined land-based animals like the elephant, rhinoceros, and tiger as being among the most threatened wildlife species on our blue planet. Among many other threats, illegal trade, overfishing and pollution pose a serious threat to their survival.

From taking underwater citizen science action to voicing our concerns and demanding urgent science-based conservation measures, we’re serious about protecting marine life.

Trade restrictions for mako sharks, rhino rays and sea cucumbers in 2019, and just recently in February 2020, CMS listing for oceanic whitetip, smooth hammerhead, and tope shark, are steps in the right direction but our battle to save these valuable species is far from over. World Wildlife Day 2020 reminds us that we need to step up the fight for marine species and be a united and collective voice for our ocean planet.

World Wildlife Day 2020 celebrates the special place of wild plants and animals in their many varied and beautiful forms as a component of the world’s biological diversity. This year's theme - Sustaining all life on Earth -  aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 1, 12, 14 and 15, and their wide-ranging commitments on alleviating poverty, ensuring sustainable use of resources, and on conserving life both on land and below water to halt biodiversity loss.

Join us in celebrating World Wildlife Day 2020 and taking action for marine wildlife to help conserve the world's biodiversity.

Take Action for Marine Wildlife:
