The next wave of conservation is coming!
‘With the help of Project Aware over the last 25 years, we’ve stood together on the frontlines to protect our ocean. We’ve removed over 700 000 items of trash around the world from the ocean. We’ve activated thousands of people to take action for the health of our ocean. But what does our next wave of ocean protection look like?’ Project Aware
The next wave of ocean protectors was born with a Week Without Walls program from Gems World Academy school in Dubai. The young divers had a wonderful week of diving completing different courses and learning more about the need to protect our ocean and the creatures that call it home. In Dubai the young divers did a ProjectAware course and participated in a beach cleanup. The divers in Fujairah learn more about corals and why they are a big part of the ecosystem with the Coral Reef Conservation Course after which they did an underwater cleanup. At Musandam they looked a bit closes at the top of the food chain with the Shark Awareness Course.
There are over 450 known species of sharks and shark-like fish in the world. This number continues to grow as new species are discovered. According to a study by Marine Policy 100 million sharks are killed a year. The major threats are overfishing, bycatch and finning.
It is the top of the food chains job to keep it in balance; if we remove this important link the whole system will fall down.
Divers Down wants to thank all the young divers that decided to become the next wave of ocean protection.
If you wish to be a part of the next wave of protection come dive with us at Divers Down for one of the many Project Aware courses we offer.
