There,s nothing worse than going for a dive and being greeted by plastic bottles, drink cans, rubber shoe soles, takeaway coffee cup lids, etc. The widespread pollution of plastics and the emergence of the 'plastispehere' (scary stuff!) is catastrophic for both marine health and our own. Come join your fellow diving enthusiasts and ocean lovers at the UNSW Underwater Clubs own 'Dive Against Debris'!

Come for a scuba, freedive or snorkel! We will be meeting at Little Bay Beach on Sunday 9th of April for a beach cleanup. The plan is to go out for a dive and collect as much plastic rubbish as we can. We will then be reporting our collection to Project Awares citizen science program Dive Against Debris (this will involve weighing and classifying the rubbish using their data card). We will also be organising a BBQ and beers to carry us through - gold coin donations welcomed.

The dive site: Visibility is usually great here and despite being known as one of Sydney's cleanest beaches, there is always an assortment of plastics caught up in the rocky reef. This site is popular for sea anemones, black urchins, squid and tiny fish, travelling in large, brilliant schools. Nestled in amongst two rocky headlands, expect to see lots of overhangs, swim-throughs and small canyons. The maximum depth of the dive site is at 15 m and is appropriate for all levels of divers.

The Underwater Club will be hiring out diving and snorkelling gear.
The event is opened to everybody and you're more than welcome to come with your own gear. If you want to hire gear from the club you'll need to become a member of the club if you want to hire gear (it only takes a few clicks and a few $$)

This will need to be done via our online gear portal, check it out here https://www.revolutionise.com.au/underwaterclub/gear-hire-portal/. There are over 20 full sets of diving and snorkelling gear available - first in best dressed. Gear is hired out weekly and is available for pickup on the Tuesday or Thursday before between 6-6:30pm from our gear shed on campus. You are responsible for picking up and dropping off your own gear.
