April's rubbish dive!

updates

During our Dive Against Debris held on Saturday, 15 volunteer diver brought up 332kg of rubbish from the ocean floor. This time we worked off the seafront to the north of our dive shop towards the helipad and off shore from Fatumara Park and the Anchor Inn. There is still some debris from cyclone pam-wrecked boats but the majority was the usual suspects of drinks cans (32) and bottles, glass(112) and plastic(17). But the most interesting find was a whole jar of pickled onions! Thank you to all our volunteers: Nish, Lana, Cameron, Aya, Brent, Ajay, Quintin, Johny, Rifkin, Fanco, Russell, Trish, Emily in the water and Dash, Georgina on shore as well as to our Big Blue staff Sam, Fred and Fab.
Not only did we have a dive to clear rubbish this time, but the ANZ bank sent a team to help too: Charles, Angela, Johny and Turoa and Zac. They had seen reports of our previous dives and asked if they could hlep too. They collected and surveyed land-based rubbish on the shore along the Anchor Inn carpark and Fatumara Bay. They collected 5 bag full of rubbish totalling 33kg. All this rubbish would have got washed off the land into the sea in the next heavy rain. So a big Thank you to the ANZ team too for doing their part in protecting our beautiful marine environment from litter.
