Mutley the shark

The Life of Mutley the Shark.

The Deep Blue Sea: Swarming with life, rich in diversity, bustling with activity and for over 450 million years it has been the home of Mutley the shark. Being number one in the food chain, Mutley understood the importance of his job; to ensure everything in the ocean remained in balance. Mutley and his mates took great pride keeping all the other fish inline. They knew if they didn’t, the ramifications for the rest of the world would be devastating.

One day while doing his rounds, Mutley strayed further afield than usual and stumbled across an odd looking animal splashing around in the water. Meaning no ‘arm, curiosity got the better of him, so he took just a nibble. It wasn’t really his cup of tea. Nonetheless it was human's arm! Shortly after the media got a hold of this information, it exploded into outrage, swiftly becoming a feeding frenzy, they were out for blood.  “Cull, cull yelled the people!”

Unaware, this was already happening. Every year over 100 million sharks are being killed through various destructive fishing practices. Ocean liners with nets kilometres long grabbing everything from the sea that stood in their way. Without selection, sparing nothing. Mutley’s crew were already on the edge of Extinction.

Close to retirement, Mutley dreamt of spending his remaining day’s playing cards, and being the poker shark he knew he always was. Unfortunately, this was not to be the case. He too fell victim to a similar atrocity. Now what remains of his body lay disregarded at the bottom of the sea.

However, the memory of Multey the Shark and his contribution to the planet have not gone unappreciated. Instead, you might say he is even honoured and cherished. Somewhere in the South of Asia, within the finest ballroom of one of the most prestigious hotels, stands a decadent mahogany table, lined with ancient Chinese bowls, brimming with shark fin soup. One of the finest delicacies on this delicate plant.
