Teaching the AWARE Shark Conservation Specialty

updates

Working at Stuart Cove's Dive Bahamas is just the perfect place to be teaching this very worthwhile specialty.  Luckliy here in Nassau, New Providence we have a very healthy population of sharks and see a variety including Caribbean Reef Sharks, Nurse Sharks, Great Hammerheads and even the occasional Tiger Shark.

What is great about this course is that you can personalize the powerpoint slides to show your local sharks species (and put some photo's of yourself with sharks!) This makes it more interesting for your students and also gets them excited about the dives.

Sharks have been protected in the Bahamas since 2011 however it is still very important to push shark conservation so that other countries start to follow suit.  Our sharks travel great distances and when they leave the Bahamas are no longer protected and can very sadly be killed.  When I teach the class students are always shocked by the facts and figures presented and by the end are keen to get involved with whatever they can do to help.

To teach this course you do not have to see sharks on the dives however luckily for me here in Nassau I can guarantee a few of our dive sites will always have sharks.  Students have the choice of doing our Shark Adventure Dive or visit one of our many other sites frequented by Sharks. Sadly our sharks are still vunerable to fishing hooks/lines/ropes etc and the students spend the time to look for these non natural injuries during their dives.

Learning to dive responsibly with sharks is vital and makes it more enjoyable for you and the sharks! Teaching this specialty is vital in spreading the plight of sharks and making your divers active shark advocates.
