Dive against Debris clean up dive

updates

Aow Leuk is a beautiful bay on the east coast of Koh tao that is definitely worth a visit. Unfortunately during our rainiy periods the winds and tides wash up a lot of debris onto the beach.

For the past 3 months we have been doing regular clean up dives there. This month we had a team of 13 people that managed to collect almost 60kg of debris. This was by far the most we have collected. After alot of heavy rainfall during the past few weeks, it was obvious just how much the rain washes debris into the ocean. With the help of some of the staff from DJL diving we had a great team of people that helped to collect, sort and submit our data to project AWARE.

Some of the more unusual things we found included a flip flop, a wellington boot and a make up bag still with the make up inside! Unfortunately it was mostly plastic bags. However we did see a huge improvement on the amount of straws collected after a few bars on the island recently agreed to stop giving straws with every drink. If only some of the shops and restaurants could stop giving plastic bags with everything!

Having also recently achieved the status of Dive against Debris instructor I was proud to be able to certify 5 of our DMCs for this distinctive specailty. I hope they will continue to spread the word about the importance of keeping our oceans clean. Watch this space for more information on our next Dive against Debris day in December.
