The first of many...

updates

We awoke on Saturday morning to looming storm clouds and rumbling thunder, not a great start for a dive! Event planned and a few divers interested in helping to clean up the shores of Montserrat, we braved the weather and dodged the rain to begin building the first of many ongoing surveys for Montserrat Island Dive Centre.

Two pairs of hands, half an hour, and 100m of beach front saw an abundance of food wrappers, mainly polystyrene, plastic and glass bottles and various fishing waste, metals and wires.

The strangest thing we found was an old TV! It had been there a while and was burried beneath some boulders. The glass was cracked into peices and the metal componants were corroded almost beyond recognition. We removed what we could, but what was most intruiging was how come it was even there in the first place?

Our beaches should not be a place to dump our waste. So why do we continue to do it?

Every month Montserrat Island Dive Centre will be teaming up with Coral Cay Conservation to help clean up the beach and beneath the waves, conducting surveys and recording waste we find in a bid to help to keep our oceans clean.
