September Dive Against Debris - Zephyr Cove Resort Marina - Lake Tahoe Nevada

updates

We decided that we would do our September Dive Agianst Debri at the Zephry Cove Marina rather than Sand Harbor this month.  Our Sand Harbor survey location has been picked pretty clean of Marine Debris and we had a large group of divers who really wanted to make their dives count.

Zephyr Cove Marina at Lake Tahoe is a very busy marina during the summer season at Lake Tahoe so we figured we would have a lot of debris to remove.  We were not wrong.  Our dive teams managed to collect over 250 pounds of marine debris.  The larges item collected was a metal gangway structure that had fallen off of a large boat.  The metal had decayed creating sharb edges in many places.  Due to Lake Tahoe's lowered water level due to drought the metal was now in water shallow enough that it posed a hazard to swimmers and deep draft boats.  We also removed several tires, loads of bottles, cans, plastic and other boat related debris like carpet mats, a metal boat seat and several feet of chain.

This was a great effort on the part of over 20 divers.  It was a pleasure diving with everybody and I want to congradulate 8 divers who elected to participate in the Project AWARE Dive Against Debris class and receive their PADI Debris Removal Diver specialty certifications.  GREAT JOB EVERYBODY!!!!
