With all the equipment duly revised and ready for scuba diving - and waiting for the weather to improve, as predicted – five young women and 6 young men will dive for their Open Water PADI certification.

The dives will take place during the first half of July during school break. They will complete their practical immersions of the course and then will be tested towards their theoretical written test on recreational diving.

They will also be tested in knowledge based on two additional modules designed by CEBU Ambassadors of the Sea, one about Lionfish and another module referred to the problem of garbage in the ocean. With all of that they will have completed the entire curriculum and will apply for PADI certification,

The rush to “graduate” them soon is that these young men and women need to be duly trained to participate in the 4th Lionfish Tournament organized by the Association of Artisanal Fisher people of the Southern Caribbean (ASOpacs) annually since 2012.

This year the tournament includes a day of Lionfish catch using scuba to go deeper than divers who will use their lungs in the catch the day before.  It is known that one of the characteristics of the Lionfish is that it can live it adult life in a broad spectrum of depth in the ocean, ranging from one meter to over 60 meters.  ASOpacs has designed a way to tackle most depth by using traps, su¡cuba diving and snorkelling techniques.

On September 27 in Manzanillo beach, about 50 divers and divers "scuba" will dive the sea to catch the invasive species that threatens to destroy our seas.   A day earlier, on Saturday 26, snorkelers and “lung divers” will  participate in traditional tournament.

Upon completion of this first phase of training with tanks for 11 youth from the Southern Caribbean, CEBU will open two groups of four each to be trained in  October, if the weather allows it. Many people outside the Southern Caribbean have expressed that they want to take the course offered by CEBU Ambassadors. The long-awaited guidelines and requirements for these courses will be published by the end of July.

Master Diver and instructor Fredrick Wright will teach the diving course while Andrés Hernández (Master Diver) and Sigrid Lahmann will teach the two special modules on Lionfish and plastic debris in the ocean.
