Sam's Tours First Dive Against Debris Survey

updates

On January 17, 2015, Sam's Tours Palau hosted its first Dive Against Debris Survey, which was a great success.  12 participants attended, consisting of guests, staff, and locals from around Palau.  After diving for approximately 90 minutes, we all collected an estimated 160 lbs (320 kgs) of rubbish from under our dock.  This consisted mainly of bits and pieces of fishing line dumped from our previous next door neighbors, who were a long-line fishing company.  There was also quite a few beverage bottles, aluminum cans, batteries and plastic wrappers.  Other unusual things collected include a glass syringe, computer tower, broom, pillow, and chair.

We are amazed at the amount of rubbish that our participants collected, but there is still even more rubbish lying on our reef.  Because of the enormous amount still left, we will be organizing bi-monthly Dive Against Debris Surveys to try and eradicate every single piece of rubbish.

This upcoming Saturday will be our second event, which is again open to everyone willing to help!  We are so grateful for all the volunteers who come out, we couldn't make such a big change without them!

Pictures of the first and second dives are hopefully to come soon!
