Dive Against Debris: Cleaning up Coniston

updates

Dive Wimbledon has compled a sucessful Dive Against Debris survey, removing 18kg (40lbs) of rubbish from Coniston in the English Lake District.

Divers everywhere are fighting back against marine debris – the ocean’s silent killer - one dive at a time. Fresh water sites need attention too, so the team headed to the north of England for a day of debris action.

Starting with a training dive for the Dive Against Debris speciality, limited debris was found at the first survey site, a popular dive location at Bailiff Wood.

The main clean-up dive took place at Rigg Wood pier, a famous beauty spot, popular with photographers looking to capture spectacular images of the lakeland scene.

After many years of tourist impact, with items being dropped into the lake, lots of debris was found - and removed - by divers in the area under the jetty.

A wide range of trash was recovered, the most common being lost footwear and clothing. Glass bottles also littered the site, along with fishing gear and the remnants of picnics held on the peir.

Having thouroughly cleared the area, the debris was sorted, counted and recycled at a local facility. Local residents were pleased with the outcome, with one describing the action as a "wonderful thing to do."

Look out for more Dive Wimbledon actions, including Dive Against Debris on the River Thames, in 2015!
