In support of Project Aware's Dive Against Debris Month of Action, Don Foster's Dive Cayman are organizing a beach clean-up in the Red Bay Dock/South Sound beach and shoreline on Sunday September 30th, commencing at 8.30am (before it gets too hot!) and finishing... when we all get too hot!

Don Foster's Dive Cayman decided to organize a beach clean-up rather than a dive to remove debris, because many of the accessible dive sites around Grand Cayman are away from the shoreline at a depth of 30 feet or deeper. They do not collect an overwhelming amount of marine debris and are regularly dived by large numbers of divers who tend to collect trash as they go. The shoreline of Grand Cayman collects the greatest amount of trash and marine debris, however many sites are inaccessible to dive from the shore due to the island's natural shoreline formation, known as 'Ironshore'. The Ironshore is extremely sharp and jagged, making shore entries in many locations hazardous.

However, a large amount of trash and marine debris is washed up onto the beaches and shoreline of Grand Cayman, particularly after storm surges and high tides. In light of the above, Don Foster's Dive Cayman has chosen to focus its efforts to remove that marine debris and trash from the South Sound beaches and shoreline before it is washed back into the sea.

Don Foster's Dive Cayman will be providing garbage bags, gloves and drinking water. Volunteers will also receive a small thank-you gift from the dive shop in appreciation of all their hard work.

Volunteers are encouraged to contact the dive shop on South Church Street on 949 5679 prior to Sunday September 30th to register and should remember to wear sunscreen and a hat on the day, as there is not a great deal of shade available along the beach and shoreline.
