Every year thousands of divers and non-divers alike come together with one common goal; to clean up our world`s oceans and waterways. More than six million tones of debris enter our oceans every year, and this doesn`t even account for what`s happening in our lakes and other waterways.

In 2009 we had much success in cleaning up the sections of ocean located at the Lighthouse Pub Marina and Government Wharf, emptying more than 1000lbs of debris, but we didn`t quite finish the job. There were still numerous pieces of debris that we were unable to bring to the surface, so this year, let`s try and get it all!

On Saturday, September 24, at 10am, we will be meeting in the parking lot of the Government Wharf at Porpoise Bay, beside the Lighthouse Pub. We will be running two dives this year. Our first mission is to cleanup under the Government Wharf at Porpoise Bay and the second is to cleanup under the Lighthouse Marina. Snacks will be provided by Sirens By The Sea Steakhouse between dives, and the Lighthouse Pub will be providing a burger and beer (beer available for those of age), after the event at Buccaneers.

Any and all non-divers are welcome to join us as we will be in need of some extra hands on the surface to help sort the debris that we remove.

The District of Sechelt has volunteered to dispose of the debris we collect in an appropriate fashion, and Direct Disposal has offered a container so that we can recycle as much as possible. Free air and half priced rental gear will be provided by Suncoast Diving for those needing it. Please confirm rental gear by Friday, September 23, with Rob or Sarah at Suncoast Diving.

Remember, anything you do, no matter how small, to improve our waterways goes a long way in sustaining survival on this beautiful planet we call home.

Let's do our part locally, to keep our playground clean!
