Palace Wall Dive Against Debris

updates

We had the biggest turn out ever for a Dive Against Debris on Saturday 27th September with 34 Divers helping out.  We had to take out two boats to Palace Wall and all the divers spread out to cover as much of the area as possible.  A big thanks to Stuart Cove's Dive Bahamas for supplying the boats, gear and crew including captains Carl & Dexter and Instructors Terri, Gigi, Katie and Charlotte.

We collected roughly 30 pounds of debris. The reason this weight is so low is our main item of concern is fishing line.  The whole dive site is covered in discarded fishing line often with hooks and sinkers still attached.  Removing fishing line is very time consuming and takes great care, all the divers did a great job of carefully removing sections without disturbing the reef...a great skill to perfect your bouyancy skills!  We removed around 300 pieces of fishing line!

A gorgeous sunset was enjoyed on the boat ride back and the debris was sorted and put into categories back on the dock.

A large group of volunteers came from the Lyford Cay International School Dive club 'Diving Dragons' so a big thanks to you guys and all others who came along to do their part to protect our local marine life.
