WSORC Snorkel Clean-up July 16, 2014
What a wonderful morning to be out collecting trash! This go around the clean-up team had four members: Lucie, WSORC director, two new interns Chris and Hannah, and one volunteer Joe. With Carnival coming, we wanted to get a good load of garbage out of the Bay to have a good baseline for post-carnival clean-ups. Carnival is always a great time - but with the festivities comes a lot of potential waste.
The crew cleaned up a whopping 60 lbs (27 KG) with just four people! The majority of the items collected were plastic drink bottles, which is no surprise with the amount of restaurants and bars in Utila. A close (and relatively surprising) second was PVC piping of all different sizes. Our third, and expected, amount of items found were aluminum cans - which are so easy to recycle, and you get paid for recycling them!
Thanks for everyone coming and helping out with the clean-up!
