On the 16 of June 2013 Reef Conservation organised an Open Day in Anse la Raie, Mauritius to present our project of Voluntary Marine Conservation Areas (VMCA) to the Mauritian public (specially those living in the area of the project). REEF staff and volunteers helped set up the tents and posters in the morning. The event officially started at 10 with the first music group playing at 11H. There were 4 main tents: Reef project, Roches Noires Eco Marines, Kids corner and VMCA corner. In addition there was a tent from another NGO: Mauritius Marine Conservation Society (MMCS) as well as visits of the nearby mangroves, wetlands, and Nauticaz (info/lab centre with an aquarium). Games included a giant snake and ladder, a fishing game where people had to decide whether to keep or put the fish back based on size, a turtle eating game (to show how plastic bags can be mistaken as jelly fish by turtles), a fishing net demonstration (to show how if you have large enough mesh the small fish will not be caught) and a quiz people could answer to get a prize at the end of the day. Other stands included posters about VMCAs, monitoring and research associated to the project; dos and don'ts in the lagoon; Mangroves, Reefs and sea grass ecosystems; marine debris. The last music group played from 14H00 to 15H00 after which the day ended with a mini tombola for those who had correctly answered the quiz.
