First Finathon in the Philippines

updates

Calypso Diving is hosting the first Finathon in the Philippines this May. With 12 fundraisers already signed up it promises to be a FINtastic Finathon.

"We plan to set up buoys out the front of Calypso just off the beach for the swim. Many of our staff have chosen to set up their own fundraising page and picked a distance to swim, if they exceed their fundraising target they pledge to swim even further!" said Sue Gibbins, Calyspo Course Director who is swimming on the day.

The team have a 'Calypso Family' relay team for anyone to join should swimmers just turn up on the day. In case the weather isn't ideal the Calypso team are happy to dive into the resort's training pool to complete their target distances.

Swimmer Andrew Barrett brings a sense of humour to his fundraising appeal: "Luckily there are no shark fins or shark products in mince pies! I'm an enormous fan of both sharks and mince pies. Unfortunately the mince pies have expanded my waistline and this is a great way for me to hopefully burn off some of the excess calories and save sharks at the same time. The competition with in Calypso Diving is strong and within my competitive nature there can only be two winners- the SHARKS and ME!  If the target is met I will swim 1,500m. Every $10 over the target I will swim an extra 100m."

Berting, PADI Divemaster, will swim 400 meters to fundraise $100 – the cost of a bowl of shark fin soup. "As a diver I care about the marine life, especially sharks which are important for the environment. I'm a PADI Divemaster now and I want to join with Calypso and Project AWARE to help protect sharks."

Gery Buob said "I've been in the water with sharks since I was a child and I love swimming with them, they're awesome animals and deserve our respect and protection.  I can't tell you how many of our divers ask me "Where can I find sharks?" Everyone wants to see them, everybody loves them. But sadly my list of answer for the divers grows shorter as time goes by. Sharks are being fished and finned and they need our help."

Good Luck to all the swimmers in Calypso Team on 29th May 2013: they're a competitive, fun and inspiring crew and deserve the best weather for their Finathon.

Support sharks and donate to the Calypso team.  Or join the Finathon and get swimming to end finning.
