Shortly after sunrise at the Egyptian Red Sea coast our Earth Day Clean Up started at 6 o'clock in the morning. Marsa Um Tondoba, the beautiful bay only 14 km south of the city of Marsa Alam was the first location for several clean ups today. It was only a beach clean up necessary as Blue Heaven Holidays diving center is always keeping its house reef at Tondoba Bay clean and any rubbish is collected immediately during a dive. Nevertheless the 1,6 km long beach needed a clean up and three hours later the first truck was loaded full with collected garbage, which was brought to the Garbage Recycling Plant in Marsa Alam city.
With more people joining we continued out clean up efforts in the next bay, Marsa Samadai. Guests from Lagoona Dive Center, who came for two nice dives in the bay got interested and joined the clean up. Several plastic bags were collected under water in the bay and from the coral reefs. But the biggest job was to clean the beach. Hundreds of plastic bottles and thousands of cigarette buds were picked up.
The most curious items found were a toilet seat, vitamin pills and an emergency oxygen mask.
All over all more than 20 big garbage bags, several cartons and boxes were piling up on three trucks and all brought to the Recycling Plant where the plastic bottles are being recycled to new plastic bags for rubbish collection for the next upcoming clean up!
