Finathon! Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia

updates

On the 4th of November, Dive Downbelow Marine and Wildlife Adventures hosted the first Finathon event. This event is the first of its kind on a global scale. The objective was to swim 1km with mask fins and snorkel to raise money for Project AWARE and that money is going to be used to help stop shark finning globally.

This is a really important matter globally and personally to me, sharks are worth ten times there amount alive than dead. They bring in vast amounts of tourism to an area which helps the local economy. During my thesis in university I studied the effects of Shark finning and the results were extremly alarming many of the species of sharks around the world are know endangered due to Shark Finning.

When I heard about this event I contacted friends and family in England and raised 650 malaysian ringint which is around £130 English pounds. I was the 4th highest individual doner of money. The event itself raised a very large amount of money for Project AWARE which can be used to help prevent this practise globally!

Hopefully this event can become an annual event so that money can be raised every year, and that each year the event becomes bigger and bigger with more media attention.
