MMW 2012 was another incredible success This year with tons of rubbish collected and many environmental and community projects completed. The openeing ceremony, which was attended by The District Officer of Semporna, Mr Ibnu Haji Baba, the Panglima of Mabul, the PGA, the participating dive operators (Mabul marine committee), the people of Mabul and guests of the resorts, started on the 29th of September kicked off with local dances and environmental shows and Speeches from the District Officer, the Panglima and Scuba Junkie who have chaired the successful event for the last 2 years. The next week saw such projects as Beach cleans (removing tons of rubbish from the island), Reef cleans (Dive Against Debris for Project AWARE), as well as Reef Check Malaysia lectures and reef check dives. This was followed by Shark and Sea Turtle presentations covering biology, species, habitat and threats to these unique species that call Sabah Home as well as fund raising and the Painting of the local Mosque, the heart of the local community and much more. Serimah Ibrahim also attended the event for the second year as its ambassador and helped close the ceremony and certificates from project aware were given out to all who took part in this vital and worthwhile event. More efforts are being undertaken to spread these events and to address the environmental and community issues of the island.
