Earth Day Clean Up

updates

It has become a bit of a tradition at Tokoriki, to do a twice yearly clean up of Monuriki Island.  In celebration of Earth Day, on a rainy Saturday morning, volunteers from Yanuya Island school joined us in cleaning up this spectacular island.

Despite the rain, which are volunteers didn't seem bothered about, we all had great fun.  As a thank you each of our volunteers got a goodie bag of school stationery, and later on were presented with certificates.

Monuriki Island has been made famous in Fiji, by the movie 'Cast Away'.  Since then, it has become a popular island with snorkellers, nature lovers and simply those wanting to see where the movie was filmed.

It has been made a marine and land reserve by the local landowners, as it is home to three endangered species - Hawksbill turtles, the Fijian Crested Iguana and Tropical Dry Forest (TDF) an endangered type of vegetation unique to volcanic islands in the Pacific.
