Project AWARE Beach Cleanup, Dungun, Malaysia - 13 April 2012

updates

This event marked the second year Ocean Elements Sdn Bhd - PADI Dive Centre had organised a beach cleanup event in Dungun, Terengganu, Malaysia. We would like to thank Majlis Perbandaran Dungun (Dungun City Council) for their support and assistance which made this year’s event another success. This year’s event is wholly sponsored by Bank Islam Malaysia Berhad (Bank Islam) as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives.

This year’s cleanup event span the entire 10km length of Dungun beach, starting from Teluk Gadung, all the way to Tanah Lot. More than 100 staffs of Bank Islam from their Headquarter in Kuala Lumpur and the local branches took part in the cleanup, together with about 350 Dungun residents from several nearby schools, Politeknik Dungun, Universiti Teknologi MARA and government agencies including the police, fire department and the Civil Defense department, volunteering hand-in- hand with the Dungun City Council cleaning contractors.

At the end of the 3-hour program, 875kg of thrash comprising mostly of plastic materials and glass bottles collected from the beach were weighted and sorted for Project AWARE statistics. 20 volunteers then spent nearly one hour just to sort and weigh all the rubbish collected.
