A win for Giant Manta Rays

updates

Parties to the Convention on Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) have reached agreement to list the globally threatened giant manta ray under CMS Appendix I and II. The listing obliges CMS member countries to provide strict national protections for the rays and their key habitats, and encourages global and regional action among all Range States to conserve the species. This marks the first international agreement aimed at conserving manta rays which are extremely susceptible to over fishing. Project AWARE actively supported the proposal so another milestone for sharks and rays.
